My career over the past ten years afforded me the opportunity to work for very strong leaders as a doer; a builder. Now, at an inflection point, I shifted from leading through my work as an individual contributor to empowering others by leading through drumbeat and strategy. I am fortunate to have worked at companies where folks were very good at the drumbeat; just listen to some of the AOL or TIME Inc. quarterly earnings calls. I am at the point of my career where it is my turn to do the drumbeat.
My product philosophy is to develop wholly owned and operated products and businesses whenever possible. I believe owning as much of the user journey as possible enables brands to value exchange with consumers to convert commoditized short term relationships into valuable long term relationships. This is where real value loops are unlocked- first party data and insights come with trust in brands further unlocking the ability to inform content, product, and ultimately revenue opportunities. By creating long term relationships with customers through a product first approach, companies can begin to gather powerful and valuable data points like location, retail patterns, and habituated preferences.
The best-laid plans only get products so far. Teams of people are the core of Agile methodology. It is strong teams with balanced strengths and supported weaknesses that are imperative to matching the right problems with the right solutions. Agile gives us a frame of reference to life's chaos. For me Agile isn't just an office place trick, it is a lifestyle. A state of mind. Whether building a house, planning a wedding, training great teams, or developing software, no situation is the same and no outcome is certain. Agile reminds me to stay nimble while adhering to process, to set strong goals, to set a cohesive vision, and ultimately beat that drum to help everyone over the finish line.
